Here, I learned from Mackie that Nozick was actually preceded by J.J.C. Smart. I found Smart\u2019s discussion of pleasure-giving electrodes in his <em>An Outline of a System of Utilitarian Ethics<\/em> (1961):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/smart_1961.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"931\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/smart_1961.png 583w, https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/smart_1961-188x300.png 188w, https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/smart_1961-490x782.png 490w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nozick doesn&#8217;t cite Smart in his 1974 book. I tried to make sure I wasn&#8217;t missing something: Fred Feldman also writes in a footnote in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.umass.edu\/ffeldman\/Nozick%20draft.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What We Learn from the Experience Machine<\/a>&#8221;
