{"id":799,"date":"2022-05-18T11:00:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/?p=799"},"modified":"2022-05-18T11:00:38","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T11:00:38","slug":"stebbing-gramsci-campbell-geach-lakatos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/stebbing-gramsci-campbell-geach-lakatos\/","title":{"rendered":"Stebbing, Gramsci, Campbell, Geach, Lakatos Added; Ockham, Mill, Marx, Ayer, Fodor, and Others Updated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve done a lot of work (in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denizcemonduygu.com\/philo\/big-upgrade-portraits-name-clicking-new-filters-mobile-version-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">big interface upgrade<\/a>) since May 2021 but I don&#8217;t know why I&#8217;ve waited this long to put together a blog post about it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I added <strong>Susan Stebbing<\/strong>, <strong>Antonio Gramsci<\/strong>, <strong>Donald Campbell<\/strong>, <strong>Peter Geach<\/strong>, and <strong>Imre Lakatos<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>I made substantive revisions with lots of new\/edited sentences for <strong>William of Ockham <\/strong>(13), <strong>John Stuart Mill<\/strong> (14), and <strong>Alfred Jules Ayer<\/strong> (17).<\/li>\n<li>I added\/edited sentences for <strong>Plato<\/strong>, <strong>Aristotle<\/strong> (2), <strong>Saint Augustine <\/strong>(5), <strong>Thomas Aquinas<\/strong> (5), <strong>Thomas Hobbes<\/strong> (3), <strong>Ren\u00e9 Descartes <\/strong>(2), <strong>John Locke<\/strong>, <strong>Francis Hutcheson <\/strong>(2), <strong>David Hume <\/strong>(2), <strong>Edmund Burke<\/strong>, <strong>Immanuel Kant <\/strong>(2), <strong>Jeremy Bentham<\/strong>, <strong>Karl Marx <\/strong>(6), <strong>William James<\/strong>, <strong>Franz Brentano<\/strong>, <strong>Friedrich Nietzsche<\/strong>, <strong>Gottlob Frege<\/strong> (3), <strong>Sigmund Freud<\/strong>, <strong>Pierre Duhem<\/strong>, <strong>George Edward Moore<\/strong> (4), <strong>Rudolf Carnap <\/strong>(2), <strong>Karl Popper<\/strong>, <strong>William Frankena<\/strong>, <strong>Wilfred Sellars<\/strong>, <strong>Donald Davidson <\/strong>(6), <strong>Richard Hare <\/strong>(2), <strong>John Rawls<\/strong>, <strong>Thomas Kuhn <\/strong>(4), <strong>Paul Feyerabend <\/strong>(5), <strong>Michel Foucault<\/strong>, <strong>Judith Jarvis Thomson <\/strong>(3), <strong>Luce Irigaray<\/strong>, <strong>Jerry Fodor <\/strong>(7), <strong>Frank Jackson <\/strong>(5), <strong>John McDowell <\/strong>(3), <strong>Richard Boyd <\/strong>(2), <strong>Daniel Dennett<\/strong>, and <strong>Paul &amp; Patricia Churchland <\/strong>(3).<\/li>\n<li>I drew 915 new connections, making a total of 3978 (2418 positive, 1560 negative).<\/li>\n<li>I went through the whole thing (1562 sentences) to look for gendered language (man, mankind, he, his, etc.) and switched to gender-neutral terms wherever I could (with a few exceptions). This was something I&#8217;d been thinking about since the beginning; I was going gender-neutral when I paraphrased but I was on the fence about modifying direct quotations from the philosophers \u2013 I finally decided to go the whole hog. This is a non-academic, personal project after all. I have the power. Like He-Man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Highlights<\/h2>\n<p>Since the interface upgrade in December, you can click on a philosopher\u2019s name and go to a new layout where you see all sentences by that philosopher, along with the connections of those sentences. I&#8217;ll be using this feature as well for some of the screenshots for these posts. it is found in Aristotle, Aquinas, and other philosophers Ockham read. Nor did he call the principle a \u201crazor.\u201d In fact, the first known use of the term \u201cOccam\u2019s razor\u201d occurs in 1852 in the work of the British mathematician William Rowan Hamilton. Although Ockham never even makes an argument for the validity of the principle, he uses it in many striking ways, and this is how it became associated with him. (&#8230;) For Ockham, the principle of simplicity limits the multiplication of hypotheses not necessarily entities. So it&#8217;s nice for me to see his <em>evolutionary epistemology<\/em> and <em>blind-variation-and-selective-retention (BVSR)<\/em> included, with its antecedents in James and Popper, forming a group of various formulations and implications of the idea.
