Visualizing the Genealogy of Ottoman Naskh Types
My friend Onur Yazıcıgil is a researcher of Ottoman typefaces and we had worked on a visualization of his research in 2019, first published in his PhD thesis and then in his chapter in Arabic Typography: History and Practice. Our main aim was to visualize the relationships between fonts which were influenced by or copied from each other between 1729 and 1928 but we also incorporated other parameters such as point sizes, first use dates, and the groupings between fonts of the same design produced in different sizes.
